I am making an asynchronous rotary spark gap out of a dc motor. I need a variable power supply for 24 volts and at least 8 amps and peak startup current around 20 amps. Can you use mosfets and a potentiometer? I would like to stay away from oscillators so i can just solder the components directly together. It doesn't need to be regulated at all. I already have a transformer and bridge rectifier along with filter cap and if at all possible i would like to use a irfp460 mosfet.

Since regulation is not an issue the simplest would be to

Use a 1A@240Vac or 2A@110Vac variac feeding the primary of a mains transformer
with bridge rectifier and capacitor on the secondary.
Not clever but simple and rugged.

Any electronic control would need to be in a shielded enclosure if near the running TC.

This is likely to be extremely inefficient, and difficult to control.

Whats so hard about a 555 timer set up for variable duty cycle driving a mosfet?

You still need the 24VDC 8A power supply though, which is a fair amount of power.

I have a 19V laptop supply here at 8.5A if thats any use..

it might be possible to vary the output by replacing one of the voltage set resistors on the TL431 regulator, if it has one.

Wow, a comment from Steve Ward. What an honor! Well the reason i don't want to use the 555 is because i don't really know how to etch and i am no good at just soldering circuit to a board. I am not going to use this motor for rotary spark gap because i think it is only 3000 rpm. I am going to make one out of an angle grinder. All i need is a chopping board.

Like any other suggestion on here, check Ebay, about 6months ago I was in need of similar power supply, I managed to get a 24v 7A fixed dc power supply for ~35$, then you could just use steves suggestion of a 555 and fet.

Ok, i have changed my mind AGAIN! I am using the rotary spark gap with dc motor. I just need to leard how to do this stuff with etching or mabey i will make my own way of doing it, which i think I will. I will use thin pieces of copper tape and just solder it. It will work..
