For your viewing pleasure and to satisfy my own curiosity, i dissected one of my recently acquired Semicron SCR bricks. The construction allows this to be done nondestructively, so none of the silicon dies was harmed. The dies are encased in some kind of soft, clear goo, so the gate structure is in plane view, it's the two little holes with the wires sticking out.
I am planning to separate the two series SCRs so I can use them separately, at least that is my excuse for taking it apart.

May I be forgiven for double posting, but I forgot to add a couple of pictures. I swear I am not trying to *bump* my thread, after all it is still on the top!

The pic in the first post was a 3 second exposure, I really have to stop taking pictures without flash... OR get a proper tripod, this Manfrotto piece of c*** with the 100€ ball-head is about as shaky as my grandpa's hands!

Interesting to see how a SCR varies from the IGBT bricks I have dissected, a lot simpler in there smile

As you can see, this brick was a fullbridge with reverse diodes, each 'leg' of the bridge was made of 2 parallel dies. The silver squares are the diodes, and the black charred blobs were the IGBTs You can see most of the gate structure on the lower left die.
