I got a Nikon D70 with a damaged hot shoe very cheaply so I decided to make a simple telescope adapter that did not cost as much as the camera.
I made a large hole in the dust cap that belongs to the camera and split an old eyepiece in two and inserted it into the hole.
The test picture shows a street light 40 metres away, the tripod was far too wobbly to get a sharp picture but it proved that the adapter works and is capable of focusing correctly.

There are only two things that can go really wrong. 1. If the ring on the inside of the lid is too wide the mirror can catch it and cause damage. 2. The camera can unscrew itself from the "adapter" quite easily and end up on the floor.
As long as those two are kept in mind I don't think there is any risk invovled since it is easy to avoid them becoming aproblem. It would still be nerve wrecking.

Just a few issues:
1. Alignment with telescope optics. When shooting through telescopes, especially those with long focal lengths, focus is critical. If the adapter isn't perfectly aligned, you'll get part of the frame in focus, and part out of focus.
2. Flexure. Plasic isn't rigid. The weight of camera, especially over different attitudes (depening on how the mount is tracking) will change your focus etc... Flexure is actually a problem throughout the entire optics chain, but supporting the entire camera by plastic makes it worse. Plus its going to mess up the alignment between frame and optics.
You're better off spending the $10.00 USD for a dedicated T-mount to avoid the aggravation. They're not expensive.
