MOV VDR/Varistor Query

Can MOV VDRs be connected in series to achieve a higher clamping voltage?

Must they both have the same slope characteristics (as well as, proportionately, sustainably sufficient dissipation) to do this effectively and efficiently?

Are there any general rules or tips about series connection of two or more MOVs to achieve a higher clamp voltage? Could a MOV be seriesed with a zener diode and work as an effective clipper at Vz + Vclamp?

Not much that I could find readily on the web, so any advice most welcome.

Terry Fritz used series strings of MOVs in the Terry Filter. I've also seen series strings of Transzorbs used, in fact I've used them myself.

The string will clamp at the sum of the clamping voltage. However the string will fail when the smallest component over-currents, or the hottest component overheats.

Being series connected, they will all take the same clamping current. The heat generated in each (power) will therefore be in proportional to the voltage dropped. The temperature rise will be the energy dumped (power * time) divided by their effective thermal mass. Time may have an effect if they have different rise times.

It was the outcome of trying to consider two or more different rise time slopes in series that puzzled me, as I could see calculus coming my way.

I'll have to try it and see! cheesey
