What if you made a SRC/TRIAC "chopper" circuit which passes only the second half of every halfwave, and used that to drive a mains xfmr with doubled volts per turn? Would that work?

If you only passed half of the waveform the transformer would only get pulses of DC and would probably soon satrate... If you put a dc block cap in series with it you might be able to get away with it, but there are better ways...

Well, I guess I did make that driver, but I never thought of using it in the way Plasmaddict suggested.
It's a clever idea, and I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work. People use light dimmers to drive ignition coils and induction coils all the time.
