I recently made a discovery that you can easily pump zvs amounts of current from a 555 flyback driver. I use the ignition coil driver from geocities,but with a smaller capacitor and pot 2 is a 2.2k ohm resistor.The mosfet is irfp460 and resistor from pin 5 is 10ohm and MOSFET gets only VERY slightly warm in operation,even when i am pumping 210 watts!
I use 50 volt supply and it pulls 4.2 amps. At higher frequencies i get very powerful arcs and at audible frequeny i get HUGE 2-3 inch sparks that go through the insulation!

Which driver do you use, could you provide a link? The only way I know to make this single switch driver efficient, is to put a resonant cap across the primary and make it "quasi-resonant", something close to Class E.

interesting. I have several old open frame monitors from old arcade games I have. even some old vector monitors. I have taken a shock while discharging a tube more times that I can count. after watching that video I am curious what trouble I can get into discharging the flyback while power is still connected. I have several old chassis to experiment with as well. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. ;)

Well i may have overestimated the sparks length but i looks much bigger in reality than in the video. Sorry about the guy in the background talking :).
