Driving a NST off a 240V inverter?!?!?

I was mucking around with my NSt the other day, and found a little portable 240V supply i made. Basically it consists of 2 12V sla's in parallel, with a 100W inverter. I plugged it into my NST to see what would happen, and sure enough, the NST worked, worked quite well actually. This sparked up the idea of a portable tesla coil, but one problem i considered was grounding. Since its a portable 240V supply, its not grounded. As far as i know, most, if not all, NSt's are centre tapped to ground...soooo, does this mean that my inverter could possibly float up to 15kv (output of NST)???? I also heard something about transformers not liking the squarewave output of a inverter, is this true? Would i have any problems turning this into a portable HV power supply/tesla coil?

A long as you have a ground rod you can connect the inverter and NST to that. As far as I know it is the inverter that may have a hard time with inductive loads like a transformer.

The output from cheap inverters is usual "quasi-sinusoidal" (a kind of 3-level approximation to a stepped sinewave!) The NST probably won't mind this... However make sure you remove any PFC capacitors on the mains side, as the inverter won't like driving these.

I think an NST based TC will run off the inverter but you will get less spark length than running from a pure sinusoidal supply. A quick simulation suggested around 20% less power for a 200bps SRSG system with comparable peak and RMS input voltages.

Ok, well i only ran it for a short time, and the rc length was pretty close to normal when running on mains. I'm not sure whats in the inverter, but the NST is just a direct transformer, no caps on it or anything.

So basically, all i have to do is grab a metal rod, shove it into the ground, connect it to my NST's case and i should be OK?
