When I was a young man (too many years ago) I worked in a loud-speaker making factory. In the engineering dept. they had a cute little machine that the guys there made for magnetizing small items, they also had a significantly larger version for magnetizing the speaker magnets. I remember that it was a coil, wound quite complicatedly or at least with many coils of thin wire (it appeared at the time) with what appeared to be a spark gap. This was all too many years back but I wonder if anyone knew of such a project or how to go about finding a schematic for such a project??? How IS strong magnetizing imparted to ferris metal on a permanent basis??
The "big machine" was not manufactured....I remember that it was a home-made design. If I am correct in needed a great deal of energy and ran off the 240v inlet. but it did function well and was used for the permanent magnets of the larger speakers. Any help would be appreciated!

I've gotten a soft iron projectile to magnetize when I "fed" it into my coilgun, it wasnt very strong but I bet if you got a good bank of flash caps and a huge coil you could magnetize things pretty well.
