tonight i wound 150 turns or 30g wire around a ferrite core very similar to Link2 5kv psu supply. i wound it in 4 layers, 1st 60 turns 2nd 40 turns 3rd 30 turns and 4th 20 turns with each layer covered with electrical tape. with a 10 turn primary and 6v in i got around 2kv out. I am a little concerned about pushing the input to 12v because of internal arcing and i was wondering if this would be a problem and if i should dip it in varnish or something or if i insulated it inough that it would not be a problem.

I once made a flyback using electrical tape as a layer separator, the corona eventually burned a hole through it.

teslacoolguy, are you running this with your 555 driver? I have a similar transformer I'd like to rewind and try with my similar ig coil driver.

Dipping it in varnish won't hurt and may prolong the lifetime, so do it.

I have done few experiments with homemade smps HV transformers and i think it is almost impossible to make decent insulation between winding layers. I have tried various plastics, epoxies, cast resins etc and they all fail sooner or later. Single layer coil is way to go.
