Hi all, I am inspired to try making a transformer by teslacoolguy's thread but didn't want to hijack it.
I have a few of these nice little ferrite cores:
(yes, I tried to fit as much HV stuff in the background as possible)
They're 40mm x 40mm x 25 mm with a 3mm gap in the central rod. Not sure what they used to be used for but the coilforms were ragged. I boiled the whole transformer until the glue melted, allowing easy disassembly. Bonus tip - Let the cores cool on a towel - don't put one on a cold metal surface as it'll shatter
Would this core be suitable to wind a pulse transformer to drive with eg Uzzors' flyback driver?
I plan to use a PP coilform, put the secondary on the core first, winding about 150 turns with insulation between each layer (mylar?), then winding a 10-turn primary over the top.
Am I likely to get something that would work and take 12V in, or is this core much more suited to a different type of transformer entirely and would be better used elsewhere?
I have seen reference to making sure the spacer on a flyback transformer is in place, or removing it, according to application; I'm not sure if I need to use any spacers with this core in the intended configuration.
Many thanks for any help you can offer. I'm a little awestruck by the talent here!

The core most probably comes from a DC filter choke. It could work for a flyback converter but 1) The output voltage won't be over a few kV as you'll be limited by secondary-to-core flashovers, and 2) if you wind the coils on the same axis you'll get low leakage inductance and you risk blowing up your driver if you short circuit the output.
