I just assembled a simple flyback driver using the MJE13009G.

When i connect the power i can here it whining and it charges capacitors but it does not make an arc at all.

I have used this particular flyback transformer before to make arcs and it has done it but this transistor seems to inhibit its arcing ability.

Does anyone have any ideas why it won't arc?

You are using a 555 driver circuit with a MOSFET? It might be that the frequency is a bit too low. Maybe try switching the polarity of the primary windings?

No, i am not using a 555 and mosfet. I am using 2 resistors and a transistor hooked up to 2 differnt coils on the flyback.

Look at this schematic

Link2

Thats what i am using so i am positive that it is this transistor.

Its an inefficient driver but it gets the job done. I may not even need the flyback after i perfected my mod for the camera circuit it became a much easier and hassle free way of charging small capacitor banks.

If you don't know why its no big deal, i hate these transistors as i burnt out 3 of them already running them off 4 aa batterys lol! I need to get some really really beafy transistors.

How about going for some beefy MOSFETS?

New technology..

well the only thing I can advise you, is to try different coils with different polarity, because if you have 2 coils only 1 polarity combination out of 4 will work well.
