People are working on it... but the majority of the people on this board would tell you it's all just BS. Someone on the old forum tried to post about a CF experiment they were running, but that got shut down before we could really see his experimental setup. If you mean "real work" "reputable University labs" ... not for almost twenty years, no.
EDIT: According to the Wikipedia article, I lied. The Japanese and the American DoD are still poking at this with clown poles.

Look up sonoluminescence. That's about the only "cold fusion" topic that'll be allowed on this thread. I'll leave the warning at that and keep the thread open - for now.
The original Fleischmann-Pons (I don't care if I correctly spelled their names) experiment was BS through and through. The sonoluminescence stuff is a completely different experiment. That's not to say it works, but it has at least a vague whiff of cred as a scientific topic.

IIRC the Sandia Z accelerator just recently set a new temperature record with a 20 000 000 Amp pulse. But I guess it all depends on what one considers “Coldâ€. Many governments are considering (or already) shutting down funding to many of the researchers in this area.
The problem with this subject is there is too much bad science (ironically not just from the saucer chasers) that precedes the information base. Additionally there currently is no strong conclusive argument against the current physics and entropy models.
Some good advice I received a long time ago: “I may not know the answer either – let Mother Nature prove you wrong.†( Old Physics professor )
To this day I have yet to come across something that proves that smug $#!t was wrong.

the sonoluminescence thing even got published in nature, so it can't be complete BS, but it is still very controversial (e.g. you fire Millions of neutrons at something, and then you try and detect any neutrons that were created, but not the ones you fired in - very hard). Another interesting thing is the Ferroelectric fusor, basically a piece of Bariumtantalate or whatever gets heated up and develops a few 100kV, enough to accelerate ions to cause fusion. BTW, the well-known Farnsworth fusor, which is definitely not BS, also falls into the cathegory of "cold fusion" since it is not thermal fusion. Pretty much any high voltage particle accelerator does.

Hi, I was discussing this with someone on Friday evening, and one thing which did occur to me was to try using a liquid metal electrode shaped and deformed using ultrasound at 1.78 MHz as the active focussing system for the lower frequency SL output.
It also seems strange to not use a "crossed beam" approach with conventional SL (i.e. apply current using a pair of needle electrodes across the tank to promote bubble formation at the focus of the sound waves)
Hopefully I will try the liquid metal idea (low temp. 59C solder) to see what happens.
Another interesting experiment I'd like to try is the (infamous) "water plasma" experiment but using a low temp. alloy liquid metal anode and ball-shaped cathode, mainly so that the shape can be adjusted by rotation speed to optimise the effect.
