Hello Folks, I was just cruising around the internet looking for more info on coil guns and came across this site. Just figured it was worth posting if someone has not seen it. Type in coil guns. Most of the information is beyond my capabilities. In the pdf called "performance of a coil gun" they have built a coil gun built that uses an solid aluminum and a wound aluminum projectile.
I had not seen this before.
Is this sort of a linear induction motor? Does anyone have more info. Perhaps a simpler explination for me? Has anyone tried this in the group?? Thank you

yes, it is a pulsed linear induction motor. so it is an induction motor that is pulsed( I think you gathered that) to move something in a line.
i think it works like a can crusher/disk launcher, operating on lenz's law, which means that it repels the projectile instead of attracting it. i am in the process of trying something similar, but i have to get a bigger light bulb ballast first.

ahh just read it... mine isn't a multistage like theirs, and so far doesn't work well. you may wish to update the link, as the current one links to a search within the site. here is a direct link : http://www.osti.gov/bridge/servlets/purl/10115215-iNtKkd/native/
