Boost Converter Design

Hello!

I need to design a boost converter which should be able to run off a 12V 1A wall wart. My question is: how do I calculate the current drawn by the boost converter?

The average current through the inductor + logic current will be your current draw. Since a 555 driving an IGBT doesn't draw much current the inductor current will dominate. I' or dI/dt = V/L, so with the current "speed" known all you need is the on-time and you'll know the peak current through the inductor when the IGBT turns off. The average current can then be found by duty cycle * peak current.

Guys, is there actually any good reason why you prefer using boost converters for such huge voltage step up ratios?
As far as I know it's probably the worst and not even easiest choice for a design like that.
This is for a mini DRSSTC, spark?

Think how much loss will you get just from forward voltage drop of your IGBT.

Do you need regulated output voltage?
And power level never higher than 12W?

Are there any physical constraints on the size of the inverter?

Putting a small transformer into the circuit will really make big difference to trying to directly boost 12V to 400V or so.

mhh yeah should work. just build ur oscillator und check the load waves of the igbt.

I still think boost converters are fairly efficient. They aren't so hard to design IMO.

Main reasons for preferring boost converter (in my case) are:
1. I'm planning to put one in a micro drsstc, and that's why the HV PSU should also be small (now someone may ask: why you don't run it off line? The answer is I don't want any contact with live mains.)
2. It's partially an education project too, and I like to experiment with things I've never experimented with before.
3. I'm not sure if I can get a transformer small enough for this purpose.
