I nearly threw this block of wood out. I use it as one of many different sized blocks under my drill press.

Any idea why I should keep it?

It's a hard to get piece of wood in thickness? An example would be 2 inch thick wood.

This is the other side of the block. It contains my only woodburn fractal that I did 4 years ago and put on my site. I avoided drilling it too much.
It has now been put on Wikipedia as an example of fractals. Go down to "In Creative works" just under Bert Hickman's Lichtenberg figures.
Here is the close up on Wikipedia to compare.

A couple more I made today using pine and a salty atomiser spray.

Later, I did a video using Balsa. Rather different but I haven't processed that yet.

I use a MOT supply with 5 stage CW multiplier to give 13kV peak and run that through a 50K 200W resistor. But DC is not really neccessary and I suspect AC from any NST would be fine though because it is current limited.
It needs to run through a variac to control the voltage.
If there is no action increse the voltage, if it starts to flame and burn turn it down. If it stops give a water spray with a little salt added. (Not deionised).
Different types of wood will give different progress rates. Pine needed 4 - 13kV and was quite different to Balsa and I haven't tried a hardwood. The Balsa ran only 1500V most of the time with no voltage changes required.
The nails are just, well, nails.

Have you tried cutting into the wood to see how deeply the current has burned? Perhaps you could shave layers off with a plane. Then again you could just Ebay it. Call it Blackened Tree, Cratered Moon or something like that. If the rofl waffles sold then I'm sure this wood would too.

I should try that sometime.
There was some burnt wood sold on eBay a year or two ago, I think from one of the duelling Tesla coil shows where the mesh suited demonstrator would set wood on fire with the TC. It was done for Burning man, hence was quite iconic and a reasonable sale for the historical aspects.
