I have spent the day making some corona rings out of 1/2 inch copper tubing. Topped with my 12inch stainless steel sphere it should give reasonable field control for 200kV or so. View to miscellaneous mayhem including x-rays.
I am looking to use it for a CW multiplier. I am tossing up between: 1: high frequency CW using a big ZVS multiplier driving Flybacks (a bit low powered and hard to get) or multiple parallelled ignition coils. I have many big ferrite E-I cores with about 5kW rating. Possibly an inverter microwave which run about 1kW to run a stepup transformer. 2: 50Hz using an x-ray transformer.
Current limiting would be with a big water/copper sulphate resistor in plastic tubing. I probably should use my 18 inch sphere for this diameter corona rings.

I like the idea of the X-ray transformer since it gives you all the power you need at a very high starting voltage. At that frequency the ripple will be huge, but since this looks to be just for drawing arcs and ion experiment, it will probably be fine.
Plus its already built, so you can pretty much jump right into the multiplier section.
And thats a real nice looking base for the entire thing, too.

I would go for HF not the 50HZ, but regarding the fly-backs (I suppose you talk about the old AC type) you will need a string of pretty fast, thus expensive diodes. For me the solution with an ignition coil works pretty well. I ran the coil at 6 KHz straight from 220AC at 200W. You can actually check my latest progress on my CW here
Otherwise the skeleton with the ball looks great! It would be perfect if you could start a new project in the project section dedicated to this CW. I'd love to follow your progress
BTW: what caps are you going to use? and diodes? and what is your planned power consuption?

I remember that setup which was impressive.
I hope to have a higher voltage though. Still haven't made firm plans. I kind of like the MOT laser supply I use which has the first 2 stages being large to give a good short circuit current, but the other stages using smaller caps to build up a better open circuit voltage for big sparks.
