'evening chaps.

I much enjoy reading your respective project posts, but now it's time for one of my own:

CERN is about to flip the big switch, and in commemoration of the event, I was thinking about how hard it would be to do a serious scale down of the LHC injector (IE, a linear accelerator).

Daunting task, eh? I don't know where to start to design. I know HOW it works, but not the design roadmap. For example, I know the LHC designers sat down and said "We want to hit 7 TeV." Did they start with the target eV number, the power supply, the available space? I don't know. I also have extra limitations. $, size, complexity, etc. Can I realistically anticipate, say, 5 Mev in under 8 vacuum feet? 10 feet? How about 2 MeV? Do I start with the PSU, aiming as high as I can in output and working from there? Or the vacuum vessel? Frequency delivered? At what point do I start sizing the drift segments, and how (many, often, spaced, length)? Beam narrowing? Spacing, synchronous power application with acceleration, vacuum backfilling? Source injection? I didn't anticipate building a duoplasmatron :p

I'm betting there's a way to calculate all these things based on some basic parameters, I just don't know which point to start at :) Anybody built one? Or know someone who could start me out? I'd much like to talk to someone in the know, so to say. Or just know a good book, for that matter?

Performance depends heavily on the particle of interest, and apparatus's physical size.

Try this book it is free to download. We used it in my charged particle accelerators class, it will answer most of your questions.
