Right, after Flybacks, SGTC's, and now an SSTC, I have decided it's time to upgrade my HV armoury.
I have about 20 MO caps, and I want to "utilise" them.
After reading steve's thread on caps, I have decided to at least try to crush cans.
I am going to use a trigatron as the spark gap. Now I have very little experience with caps and cap charging, although I am well aware of the safety issues.
When people ask about cap charging, the general answer they get is "Use a variac"
How do I charge these caps, how do I monitor how much "juice" is in the caps so I can trigger it when I want?
ANy help on this subject at all would be greatly appreciated.

since you have been building sstc's I am guessing you do have a variac?

Then you just hook it up to a mot, put the original mot diode (or a string of ~10 1n4007's) in series with the hv output, and connect the cap from the diode to the core of the mot (polarity doesn't matter for any of it).

To measure the voltage I would take a string of 10 1M ohm resistors across the bank and hook your meter across the one closest to ground. Set the meter to the 300vdc scale and multiply the number by 10 to get the voltage...

Good luck!

That easy?
Sweet, love your work!
We have a roadside verge collection here atm too, should be able to get a fair few more MO caps too.

yup, that should do it. The 10meg voltage divider wont do for bleeding off caps if you have a vary large bank, but should work for now. Eventually you should use less resistance to dishcarge then faster, but as long as you have a chicken stick (preferably with a 10-100 ohm resistor in series with ground to reduce the bang) next to the bank--and use it-- you should be fine.

thanks shades

the more the merrier cheesey

You can certainly use a MOT and variac to charge your caps, but Steve found that when using DC these caps work well at over 8kv. I charge my bank using one side of a NST rectified with a few MO diodes. Keep in mind these caps have built-in 10Mohm resistors, so if you put more of them in parallel you will need more charging current to get them to a given voltage.
