Hi all,
I am currently doing my final year project and need to design an electromagnet out of an iron core bar. The magnet is used to levitate an object (approx 2kg) mounted to a permanent magnet. I am stuck at the calculations part on design this electromagnet to suit this 2kg object. What are formulas I need to apply for these calculations? I sincerely appreciate any advices. Thanks.

I guess you realise it depends on the strength of the pemanent magnet. I sugest you look at doing some smaller scale experiments with smaller coils and weights first.

I have forgotten the formula but it's something like F = k.A.B^2, can't remember the constant k. B is actual flux density, not Bmax for the magnet, you will have to solve the magnetic circuit to determine B. A is the area through which B 'flows'. Must be somewhere on the net.

There must be a height measurement that they want you to solve for, because at 1mm you only need a small chunk of iron core and no electromagnet for it to elevate a reasonable NIB permanent magnet and 2kg. At 5cm it is another story and I need a several square inch core cross section to support 200g at 70V 2A or so.

Is there any websites or books which can show me the formulas for designing this electromagnet. The sites I been to are only showing brief descriptions of the levitation kits. I need more in depth details. Thanks
