I got around to making my final electrolysis set up, but i have 1 problem. Im using 2X4 inch plates, total of 6. The base is NaOH in housed in 3in PVC. When i tried running it for more than 10sec, the foam starts coming up through the tube and into the bubbler. How can i get rid of the foam? The main chamber has a Ping Pong ball and a grid right before the tube opening. It has a good enough prodeuction to produce a HHO flame (yay :)), but i dont want my electrolyte wasted into the bubbler tap water.

Heres a labled Overall Picture:

This is a common problem in electroplating where anti-foaming agenta compatible with the electrolyte are used to solve the problem.

Hot, strong, NaOH solution will etch some plastics.

Why not take some of the solution that has been foaming, and evaporate to dryness, which may reveal contaminants or undesirable reaction products not present in the starting solution?

Im preety sure itle be fine, PVC is used in plumbing after all. Ile never be letting it get hot.

What do you think of coffe filters? How long would it last if i put several layers?

A 50% solution of NaOH at 66 deg C will cause severe attack and penetration of PVC, but have no significant effect at 22 deg C.

A 10% solution will have no significant effect at either temperature.

A stainless steel sieve or gauze might help to break up the foam. You'll just have to try it and see!
