Well I present my WiFi Rover at the local science fair coming up next weekend. Hopefully everything goes as planned, I think I have a shot at making it to ISEF International Science Fair (need to make the top-two).

My original intent was to be able to send the rover to a GPS coordinate over 802.11b/g. That turned out to be a little beyond the time frame I had available so maybe later. I may get to adding a pneumatic cannon before that happens though...

Instead, the following is functional:

-Streaming audio and video
-Navigation, speed control
-Digital Compass

There is room for more sensors and whatnot. Adding temperature feedback wouldn't be too hard. Since I'm just using SSH, I can run any program I want on the rover.

One interesting addition would be a second wireless card. That way I could pull kismet or some other wireless stumbler up with one card and maintain an internet connection on the other. A rotating antenna would also be neat, trying to hone in on some nearby hotspot and driving towards it. Or just make the webcam pan...

I just set up a webpage recently and have been working on hammering everything out. Any comments are appreciated, just start a thread in the General area I guess! The link here or on my sig. (Oh no, googlepages!)

I'll be adding some documents there as well detailing some more of the project. Hope I didn't embarass myself too much!

wow, congrats!

I generally don't sign up for science fairs and the like because there is so much time spent writing/making the presentation/attending the fairs that I could spend improving the project. I also avoid deadlines like the devil, I can't stand projects that I know I could have made better.

In any case, good luck!

That's awesome! I'm going to my state's science fair in a few weeks.. It's not nearly as interesting as the on you're doing though. It's very expiriment oriented, rather than project oriented. I like to do some sort of project, and it's not always easy to adapt it to this fair's standards.

Who won first place, and more importantly, what was their project?

The first place fellow did a very extensive project called "Digital Darwin." It had a lot of the neat natural selection programming to maximize physical characteristics of a pseudo-organism with different traits and alleles. It was programmed in Java with a nice and user-friendly interface that the judges could actually experiment with.

I would guess I put more time into mine, but his was much more clear and whatnot. I also did a couple stupid things like spelling parallel "Parrallel" on one of my schematics, and referencing something as "wattage" when power was more important... Little stuff like that was the only criticism I received.

It was funny, I was set up to give a little presentation for my Physics class this past wednesday and the newspaper ended up calling and coming to watch as well. I ended up getting into the paper, but I was a little quesy because things weren't working like they were supposed to. Here is the article anyways.

Thanks! The 4hv community was most definitely in the acknowledgments, which is page 30 in the project compilation on the site.
