Ever since I built my first small magnetic levitator (suspender is more fitting) I've wanted to make something which could lift heavier objects and with a greater distance between the electromagnet and object. On that note how would a MOT core work as an electromagnet core? I was thinking of chopping one up and using a few primaries series together for the winding. Are there any problems I need to look out for? TDU used a ballast in his MKII levitator.

It's time for some actual experimenting, and before I cut the core can someone at least answer this question. I need something to fasten the core to a frame with, and therefor a minimum amount of core is needed. Which is why I'm not using an I. Which of these two configurations is best, T or E? I imagine that an E would "focus" the field better, but I'm probably wrong. What would be best to send the largest field possible toward an object?

Hi Uzzors, I'm afraid if you use the E, most of the field will be "trapped" between the legs and it will not extend too far away from the core. So I think that "T" is better.

Done. The two primaries in the background will be seriesed and used for the winding. Really with all the new winding space I could add a lot more turns, I'll have to see about that.

I'm thinking of using hall effect sensors, since I used infrared last time. "No strings" is easier to prove then too.
The average magnetic force from an electromagnet is proportional to the average current flowing through it. The north and south poles would be constantly changing with AC, making it impractical. Pulsed DC is best since the electromagnet's inductance can be used to limit the current, instead of a power dissipating resistance. Which is why I'll be using PWM this time instead.

You can't use AC or you would be repelling the magnet 50% of the time. I used Rick Hoadley's circuit. It is important to include the feed forward circuit to make it stable. Without that you may need a copper plate underneath for damping as I use.
