After an appaerently sucessful Debian install, I booted, (well, *tried* to boot Debian) however, it just wouldn't work. It lets me select it from the GRUB menu, but after it goes through the pre-start diagnostics, it just gives me a blank screen. The backlight is on, but that's it. I've tried re-installing it about 5 or 6 times now, with different options, but nothing works. What's the problem?
Btw, I'm installing it on a Compaq Presario V6305NR.

Are you installing Debian, or a variant like Ubuntu?
Some kernels do need to be setup for some hardware, but IIRC the HP/Compaq do not. Try Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a command terminal. If it does not exsist, chances are the kernel did not load properly.
It is more likely you have a non-standard wide screen LCD, and are having trouble since the OS does not keep track of every possible monitor quirk on the market.
In Ubuntu, one may override the default max resolution by passing a kernel parameter at boot time: xres=1024x768
And adjust the resolution on the OS desktop later.

I'm installing Debian. (not a variant) However I do have Ubuntu on order, and it should be getting here soon. My laptop does indeed have a widescreen display, and that sounds like the most likely answer to the problem.

Will this also work in Debian?
And my final question...I love working on computers and figuring out the problem myself, but is trying to get Debian to work worth the trouble, or should I just wait for my copy of Ubuntu to get here?

Thanks for the help, y'all. I tried some more with Debian, however, my copy of Ubuntu arrived yesterday, and it installed without any problems. So I believe I'll be sticking with that.

Now I'm working on getting the wireless to work...
