For somereason, my camera flash isnt working. So i decided to charge my caps with a small flyback, less then 1mm arc. It charges, and pretty fast too. The bank is 200v 960uf. Is it safe to keep doing this?

Safe for whom? If you charge to 200V or less it is safe for the capacitors. The 19 joules worth of energy is not safe for you. Since something is wrong with the flash you don't know exactly how it will behave so there is a small chance that something will go wrong with it.

As long as you are not overcharging the capacitor I doubt it will do any harm, I have never had any problems come from abusing flash circuits.

im asking if charging the cap with a flyback is safe for the cap, im not using the camera flash circuit because its broken.

make sure the output is DC, and charge it via a serial high voltage resistor. monitor voltage constantly. and a flyback is serious overkill for this application.

Series resistor is a great idea, and watch voltage CAREFULLY because that flyback could have that capacitor charged to over a kilovolt before you know it.

Its odd that you mention this, because I have done something similar, but I had 15 foot leads on the flyback and LET the cap overcharge, since I had about 6 of them that were unlabeled and not worth using. Those things go off like firecrackers! (But not even firecrackers spray hot electrolyte everywhere!) The paint on door I was hiding behind was discolored in places by droplets of the liquid. Lesson learned: The voltage rating is NOT a suggestion! cheesey

well before i tried with the cap bank, i tried a 10V cap for awhile, and nothing happened.

As for constant monitering, what a good resistor so my multimeter can handle that kind of voltage? i have one of those cheap 500v max multimeters.

If you know the input impedance of you meter (this may be in the manual or you could measure it with a second meter), you could use a resistor in series with the meter to form a resistive divider. For example, if the input impedance was 10Mohm, you could put a 90Mohm resistor in series and your meter would then read exactly one tenth of the actual voltage.

i accidently kept the meter connected when i turned on the flyback to charge, but nothing happened. The multimeter constantly shows the cap charge, not the flyback output.

yeah. that's what is supposed to happen. the cap is basically causing MASSIVE voltage drop from over 15kv to ~200 volts.
