I was reading the archives and seen TDU do something similar.

I wound 5+5 turn on one side of a flyback core and 20+ on the other
and connected that to the coil.

The arcs were VERY small until i increased the cap on the driver to 10uF

EDIT: it worked better at 8uF

the coil only got slightly warm after 5 minutes of fun

As you can see in the video I have corona problems....

Impressive!

Sounds like it runs @ very high freq compared 'normal' iggy coil drivers but your arcs are great!

Got any ideas on how to stop that corona before it makes carbon tracks and arcs over?

If possible, put it under oil (even cooking oil works but not very long)

I hate oil... ill try using liquid electrical tape first,
It worked on my marx (until I ran out half way through).

Drive your coil at less frequency because less frequency means less corona. But this will probably not be possible with your circuit as ferrite cores don't like low frequencies.

If I had to run an iggy coil to get maximum power out of it, I would use a half bridge running at 100-1000Hz.

there was corona all over the ferrite one time...

I don't know how get the frequency lower. adding more capacitance? more turns on the primary?

you could get lower freq. by increasing the cap but if you go too low, the core will saturate and get hot and you will draw big currents from your power supply.
Maybe you can wind a center tap coil around the outside of the iggy coil and drive it directly but I dont know how well this will work.

This is a problem I've had with ignition coils..
Since I too don't like oil I used Araldite(TM) epoxy resin adhesive - worked pretty well for quite a long time.

Somewhere around 45 kHz (your coil may be different) the self-inductance of the secondary resonates with it's self-capacitance and the result looks like your video.

Imagine if the capacitance between the inside and outside of the coil-top insulator is 1pF, not much really.
Irms=sqrt(2) x pi x F x Vpk x C = 7 mA rms ! (If Vpk = 35 kV .. reasonable estimate)

Just 1pF will cause 7 mArms of high frequency current to 'flow' through the insulator!

The liquid electrical tape solved the corona problem!

I changed to cap on the ZVS driver to 8uF and the voltage is higher!
