Ok, I honestly feel ridiculous asking this question. On Steve's MicroSSTC schematic, which side of the IRFP460 is the source/drain? I've found the pinout, just can't remember which one goes to + and which to - lol. I'm making the SSTC and I don;t want to fry a nice mosfet by putting it in backwards....

The metal tab on the back is also connected to the drain. Make sure you use an insulating heat sink pad or your heat sinks will be electrically connected to the mains.

Hmm. Ok, thanks. The pinout you gave me ... seems consistent with what I saw on another site. The datasheet I had didn;t seem to have much on pinout... Well, thanks anyway. Hopefuly I will have this project underway again :)
Now to go get some furniture epoxy for the secondary....

Edit: Another question. on the same schematic, on the part where the TC4420 connects to the mosfet, are pins 6+7 just connected together for the output, or am I missing something? is pin 3 just left unconnected? I'm a little confused....

Yes.

You can use pin 3 if you wanted to use an interrupter. Using an interrupter allows you to have high peak power with lower average power (i.e. big sparks with less heating). You can also change the spark appearance using different interrupter settings. Steve Ward has a good section about this on his website.

Pin 3 on the 4420 chip has no internal connection. On the TI UC37322 driver it is the enable function.
