I have been conducting experiments in electrostatics. Most recently I built a modest sized leyden jar which I charge using a pvc pipe and a cloth.

When I rub the pvc pipe it crackles and pops and I begin to smell ozone...and sometimes
after playing with it for awhile I begin to feel a slight irritation in my lungs.

So my question is: how much ozone is enough to be hazardous? Are there long term effects from exposure to this level of ozone?

Ozone is not acutely dangerous at normal levels but long term exposure should be avoided.

At levels easily obtanied by a lifter in a closed room it will cause these symptoms:
  • Irritated mucus membranes
    Eye irritation
    Headace
    Nausea

People have lived for decades with laser printers that have generated enough levels of ozone to be irritating without falling over dead but it is not a good idea. It is irritating for a reason.

i've recently started experiments with high voltage, jacob's ladders etc. and i've noticed the production of ozone too...
but is there an easy way of neutralizing it?
and where are my mucus membranes?

Ozone is oxygen O3 and is extremely reactive, it disappears quite quickly by itself by reacting with things in the air or exposed surfaces. Filtering it through active carbon should remove all of it instantly until the carbon has been damaged enough by the ozone to be ineffective. Good ventilation like an open window should be good enough for most experiments.

More or less every cavity or passage in the body that is moist or wet is covered with mucus membranes. In this case mostly the eyes, mouth, lungs and nose are exposed.

I would advise caution around high levels of Ozone too, where you can walk into a room and smell it. It's pretty dangerous walking into a room or garage full of it because after a few minutes I felt an almost drowning sensation and choaking on a bunch of junk. So if you're planning on making ladders keep the voltage below the 20-30kv range.

To break down O3 you can also use UV lamps. Or if you have a method of capturing the gas and venting it, bubble it through water.
