first just get a mylar sheet(you can get one from joaan's or another craft store)and put aluminum foil on either side.leave at least .5 inches from the edges.more if you are planing on using higher voltage.you can either roll it up or leave it flat.they work well for high powered pulse applications and i have used mine at up to ~30kv.the foil WILL heat up some,more for some individuals,depending on the power that your putting through it and how thick the foil is.for very high power aplications like a 50nf and above spark gap duty capacitor use aluminum flashing.i hope this helps some do-it-yourselfers and coilers.

arcstarter, homemade capacitors are fun to make but their losses make them virtually useless because of their nonexistent reliability.
They tends to fail very quickly, especially if you push them hard. The ozone created between the conductor and dielectric will begin to eat at the dielectric, and sooner or later failure will occur. If you can evacuate all the air from in between the layers, then lifetime will be increased but only moderately.
Spend some money for an appropriate MMC if you're looking for Tesla Coil operation. Or use the dreaded beer bottle caps. I've had to use these in a pinch and they functioned just fine!
