I bought a plug-in energy monitor from Maplin a while ago, they vary in price from £12 to £30 depending whether they are on "special offer" or not (I paid £12). It was mainly to check my old and new freezer power consumption, as it records accumulated kWh.
I started playing with my multi-MOT Jacob's Ladder again last night, and was pondering the best way to measure the real and reactive power in the MOTs and the power factor correction with my Oscope and meter, when it dawned on me that this little dohickey, with its watts/VA readout, would be far simpler. It's very encouraging to plug in an 8.4uF capacitor, and read 0.6A, 144VA and 1 watt, it seems to work correctly. I believe it has one of the Analog Devices power monitor chips in there (4kHz sampling with an on chip uC to do the sums), so it should be good for distorted waveforms like rectifier/cap supplies as well.
