I would say that the time it takes to let the coil cool between shots will be far greater than any limit imposed by the SCR.

Yeah, the coil temperature could definitely be a problem. I remember reading (on the previous version of this site) about the "fun" someone had with a disk gun and the coils embedded in epoxy heating up (don't remember more specific details, unfortunately).
