SSY-1, works with Electrolytic cap camera flash?

Hey guys, long time no post. I put my larger ruby laser project on hold as i've gotten a bit sidetracked and interested in a smaller pre assembled/aligned unit first to break the ice with building flashlamp driven laser. So I am finally following the advice to get a SSY-1 YAG head....now I have read on ebay and elsewhere that a camera flash circuit (with the flahlamp clipepd out and the wires wired to the SSY1's flashlamp) will generate enough J to burn small things. What gets me though is with the very short fluorescent lifetime of YAG, how does it lase with a camera flash that I think uses electrolytics.....is that chemical Q switch enabling the longer flashlamp pulse to STILL lase the rod or something?

The caps out of a camera flash should work fine, just aim for about 20j worth of energy at 500-800v. If you remove the q-switch you can safely run about 200J.

Hey after reading one of your other posts, I got to thinking maybe I will just parallel a few of the original "OEM" PFN's from the army tank. It looks like each one makes 11.5 J at nearly full charge, so would 2 be the max safe I could parallel if I wanted to keep the Q-switch? And also, with say just 1 PFN would it pop balloons across a room? I think that would be a cool demo. Thanks man!

I would stick with a single PFN, just use a higher voltage. The caps seem to take as much as 1100v without too much trouble. MY q-switch did survive a few shots at 1200v, although I wouldn't recommend running much more that 1000v. If all you want to do is pop balloons you should be able to keep things at 750v really... I would get a lens with a nice long focal length, few meters or so, and then use a piece of toner to find where the focus is and hold the balloon there.
