I recently found this Mosfet for sale Link2 and it is only about $7 more than the irfp460. What I see on the data sheet though, is that it has a periodic avalanche rating, rather than the continuous rating of the 460. All the other specs seem good to me, but I'd like a professional opinion on it.
Do you think the SPW47N60C3 is better than the IRFP460?

7 bucks is a hell of a lot more but its also a hell of a lot beefier too. It's definitely better.

The avalanche current on both is 20A. How important is the rating for SSTC use?
I've also found that depending on what IRFP460 you look at, the price ranges from $14 to $41.
I can't see a lot of difference with them except for the letters at the end. Does anyone know what the
lettering means?
I know a lot of people kill a lot of MOSfets quickly, so I'd like to choose one that is quite hardy, work within it's
parameters and push it to its limits. I don't want to ramp it up to 30V and see it blow before any sparks come out.
The SPW47N60C3 is about $28, not as cheap as $14, but a lot cheaper than $41

The avalanche rating has (nearly) no importance for SSTC use.

I don't know where you live but here in central europe (Czech.rep.) I can buy an IRFP460 for 60czk (~$3).

Well, as it says under Location: Melbourne, Australia
The prices I am quoting is Australian dollar from RSAustralia, lucky you to find them so cheap.
Convert to US dollar and it is slightly more expensive.
Anyone know what the difference in end lettering means?
Anyone know where to buy cheaper FETs?
