My goal is very simple yet extremely complicated...to successfuly build a railgun. Hopefully if I complete it in time for my regional science fair I will enter it there, but things are looking grim regarding that aspect. Nevertheless I will complete the project; even if I don't finish in time for the sci-fair which is 6 days. I have all my material for the railgun itself but I haven't even started on the all important Cap Bank.
Specs:
Railgun consists of two 6" copper bars. Sandwiched in between two pieces of Derlin. These will be bolted together along w/ four (two on each side) L plates for mounting to the board. The bolt diameter is 3/16". My armature will be injected into the rails which will trigger the discharge of my caps!
Power source will be a Cap Bank. Still don't have the specifics nailed down yet but...my 8 182j 450v caps will be wired in parellel using bussbar. I will be using a voltage doubler w/ a 220v outlet for charging.
Injection will use a spring. Most likely a bolt action effect in which you cock it and then w/ the assistance of a long string jerk it to fire it into the rails.
Will try to post pics of my ongoing work but probably won't at all for the next week and a half due to the time crunch for the sci-fair.
Updated 03/09/06:
Now I have my copper bars cut, I have the holes drilled in the bars and Derlin (plastic), and I'm working on bolting it all together. I have L plates bolted on the side which will be bolted to the board.
Updated 03/12/06:
The railgun itself is complete. I also have one projectile made as well. Now I'm currently drilling the holes in the bussbar which will connect the caps in parellel.
