I guess this is sort of a bump since I still have the same problem... I took a break from constructing my coilgun and just tried another shot at the optical triggering and still no luck... I have gotten the trigger to work with a mechanical switch but I would like to upgrade to optical... I am still using this scr Link2 (although i only have 2 left because i killed the others) I have used this Link2 as a schematic but for some reason I cant get it to work.

Anothercoilgunsite.com If I were you I would look around on this guys site he has some good documentation and schematics.

Joe, like mentioned above you need to use ohms law to match it to your gate current for your SCR. Also that schematic is not that great for a coilgun.

I have referred to that website several times and the only schematic for an infrared switch is part of a pic based circuit. I am just looking for a basic one. Also I have used ohms law but for some reason it isnt working for me maybe its that schematic or there just something Im missing.

Jason- can you explain a little bit why that isn't a good circuit for a coilgun? I planned on using that one, and I have it working to light up an LED- i was just going to add one more transistor to the circuit in a darlington fashion to get the required current for my SCR - the datasheet says 150ma, however i thought a safer bet would be to shoot for 250ma.

So it looks like I can get both the IR switch and the scr trigger for the coil to work independently for the IR switch a volt meter shows ov when blocked and between 8-9 v when not blocked. I just cant seem to get them to work together... also I was wondering if either of these two circuits would work.. Link2 or Link2

I was looking through this thread (eventually I plan to actually build a coilgun I've been collecting disposable cameras for ;)) and tried the link at hte beginning of your thread. Apparently that site does not want visitors from 4HV because instead of the page you linked to I got: Link2 just thought i'd share.
