I had loud pop short somewhere in my YAG circuiry somewhere and can find nothing that looks as if this had happened and am unable to charge the cap at this point. How can I test the inductor in the SSY1 PFN? When I do a continuity check on the leads I get tone on every combination. Can a inductor even go bad?

As long as there isn't much resistance (<.1r) across it, it should be fine. However, it is possible that you had turn-turn arking/shorting.
But, if you can't charge the cap something else is broken, since the inductor cannot prevent the cap from charging.
I would look into the vacuum relay, or the reverse protection diode. Or it is possible that the cap itself went bad, I had one that didn't like having >700v on it

Since when I posted this update I did find that the reverse diode on the leads from the inductor to the lamp was bad. Once replaced I could no longer get continuity on all of the inductor leads as before. A new trigger arrived from Meredith and hopefully I can get everything back up and running this evening... Backtracking through old posts it looks as if the inductor leads 1 and 2 were connec ted to the positive and negative terminals of the main cap. Hopefully this is correct as it is how I plan to proceed.
