Simple, cheap High Voltage Generator

Hi everyone,

I am a new member to this forum. I wish to build a simple and cheap D.C. High Voltage Generator with output around 7.5 kV @ 5-10 mA. My input voltage is 230 VAC, 50 Hz. I would
prefer to use a single transistor/MOSFET circuit with feedback from a feedback winding of high voltage output transformer, the output rectified by suitable high voltage diode. The single transistor/MOSFET oscillator should operate directly from the rectified 230 VAC supply.
Can anybody help with suitable circuit diagram ?

I don't know about operating the single transistor/MOSFET oscillator from the rectified 230VAC. It can be done, but I think it would be much easier just to operate the oscillator from a low voltage power supply, and then switch the rectified 230VAC into the primary on the transformer.

What type of transformer are you using? Flyback? Ignition Coil?

The EASIEST way to get something going would be to use an ignition coil from an automobile. The operating frequency doesn't have to be very high, and you should be able to obtain the power you're seeking. You'll have to rectify it of course, and depending on the smoothness you need, you might need to smooth it with a HV filter cap.

If you want an even easier way then find or buy a neon sign transformer, or oil burner transformer and rectify the output to obtain DC. Might take some time to find such transformers offline, but online you can obtain them fairly easily (think ebay).
