Is anyone familiar with VERTICAL wind generators? They rotate vertically with a helical sail as compared with the standard propeller configuration. Do they work well?
Does anyone know of any residential grid-tie installations?

They tend to be less efficient, break more often (bearing stresses from greater sail area and whatnot) and most have difficulty self-starting, except for the very least efficient models. Unless your site is very gusty and turbulent so as you need the omnidirectionality of a VAWT, then you're better off with a horizontal-axis turbine. Don't know of any made/certified for residential grid tie, but I tend to focus on the homebuilts at by lurking at places like fieldlines.com (discussion board for Otherpower.com) -- those folks probably have most of your questions covered in their archives.

loadsa goodness about VAWTs over at . Have a search for Ed Lenz' Lenz2 turbine... you'll also find enough info to keep you busy for a while re grid tie (& stand alone) systems
