I have a transformer 120V to 450V, The way it was wired in the original equipment it directly charges the capacitor. So my question is do i need a smoothing capacitor on the secondary side of the transformer being all ready directly connected to the pulse capacitor?

A smoothing capacitror for a capacitor charging supply? The transformer should not be directly connected to the capacitor if you plan on charging the capacitor.. You need a rectifier (either half/full wave) to supply the capacitor with DC. As for needing a smoothing capacitor you wouldn't really need it since the pulse capacitor is already the 'smoothing' capacitor. Unless this is a different kind of power supply..

I think dan forgot a "not" somewhere in his post.
In normal cases you don't need a smoothing capacitor to charge another capacitor. The rest of the circuit is not describle clearly enough to judge if it will work or not.
