How high can MOT voltages get (by themselves)? I was always under the impression that they didn't get much over 2000V. I built an AC voltage doubler to charge three large caps. I figured it would be worth the risk to overcharge them to twice their rating. However, my little voltage meter maxed out, indicating voltages well over 6600VDC. Then one of the caps blew up and bent the bus bar. I suppose my initial guesstimates were way off.
Also, how should I handle the broken cap? I fear there might still be dangerous charges inside.

Voltage doubler = 2.8 Vpk, not really 2xpeak, and my mots were pushing 2200VAC, so the voltage gets up there pretty fast.
Dunno about the cap though. It may be shorted now, but it may not. I would carefully connect a 100K resistor to the 2 intact capacitors (which may have suffered damage as well, but you dont know that yet), let them discharge for a long time, then once those are discharged make an insertable resistor prod like a hv wand. Connect the trailing lead to the can then insert the prod end into the inside of the cap via insulated handle and let that sit for a long time.
