What's I'm looking to do is to build my own air coil transformer. The plan is to have a big coil of wire (help me with the gauge and the length/number of turns) connected directly to an AC socket (can I do that, don't want to blow a fuse). Then have another, much smaller coil that will be 30gauge, convert the AC input to DC via the bridge recitifier, charging up a small, 10v, 2200 mF capacitor, which goes through a resistor lighting an LED. So whenever the reciefing end goes near the coil it'll light up. I just need help on the coil part (mostly on the AC end.

look here: Link2 here: Link2
the first link is the one that didnt work but has a more complex circuit, the second link did work but you will need to design your own oscillator. Its not the same thing but its the same principal, good luck.

Also look here Link2 and here Link2 and here Link2

Everyone seems to be using some sort of high frequency oscillator. 60Hz probably doesn't do anything except burn your transmitting coil up.

yes, low frequency will not work for an air cored transformer. You will need something like 20khz to 100khz and it works fine with just 12v you will probably have at least 100v output if you use mains voltage (at the above frequencys) which is too high, you only wanted 10V output.

thanks guys, I might not use ac mains because I don't want to blow a fuse or electricute myslef, but if I were to it would be a step down AC coil, so it would be around 10v.

You could try using the royer oscillator running off a little 12V step down transformer (even a little wall wart), instead of a flyback you would just use an air cored coil wound on a mouse pad like in the link.

Hi Brian

You definitely need to be aware of what are you doing before plugging things into mains.

Regarding 50Hz, it doesn't need to necessarily be 'doing anything but burning your coil up'.

Your best try would be to get an induction cooker coil and powering it from low voltage transformer. If you are lucky you might be able to light a led from few centimeters of distance, with proper receiving coil. I think some people even levitated pieces of aluminium using those.

Surely don't expect anything spectacular from that, and don't bother to wind your own coil - it's too much work.

Going into high frequencies surely makes things a lot easier.
