The small YAG rod I purchased from Meredith has a black ring about 1/32 or so from the each end of the rod.
Are these left over from the cutting and polishing processes or are they significant in some other way?

There are usually heavy metal collars with special mirrors mounted on each face.
1.) Lasers... check...
2.) Acquire Hideously mutated sea bass..
3.) ?
4.) Profit....
