well I have been playing with tesla coils for about the last 2 years. I am having alot of reliability issues with my 6 in. coil run by a 4 mot supply. I have decided to give it a rest for a while and try something else. The thing is I don't know what. I have three evil genius books but they are kind of a letdown. In terms of diffulculty and money these are the projects I was thinking about.
magnetic pulser- can run can crusher, rail gun, coin shrinker, wire vaporizer and other stuff. would like to make this but am a bit intimidated!!!
lifter-like the idea but have virtually no good plans to go by.
flyback- tried the 2n3055 circuit not really impressed.
c02 laser- seen one on power labs.
emp cannon- seen one in electronics for the evil genius bu never heard of anyone making one
money in the long run is not that really big of a problem provided it's not over 500 bucks. 100 would be even better. Diffulculty of project is what I am worried about.

Concerning the lifter, Jean Louis Naudin has done a lot of work on the lifters and shows in simple steps how to make them. Cheap project too. The magnetic pulser would be a good challenge though if you are intimidated by it.

So try other circuits then! like the "zvs" or "mazilli" driver or even half-bridge. These circuits can generate some really scary arcs of your flyback.

First, the expensive items; - High energy discharge capacitor for can crusher, rail gun, coin shrinker, emp cannon. - vacuum pump for CO2 laser
Next, the dangerous items - High energy discharge capacitor and anything attached to it. You are sensible to be intimidated, the first mistake could be your last - best left until you have a lot of hv experience, but then again four x MOT is very scary to me !
So that leaves lifter ans flyback, and since a lifter needs a flyback that's probably the best place to start. The other three projects would also require a flyback or similar hv source also. So the question becomes - what type of flyback inverter to build?
So I think that you should start with a nice flyback invertor.
Although the performance of flybacks driven by half-bridges and full-bridges and cvs/royer drivers are impressive they are not much use for real experimenting - I recommend the classic flyback design.
555 or 494 ic oscillator/controller, mosfet or igbt switching transistor, snubber, flyback transformer. My first choice would be to use 12Vdc as the power source since 12V batteries and power packs are common. A reliable high voltage supply is a very useful bit of kit for a hv experimenter. Build it in a nice box with an on/off switch, power/voltage control knob, output voltmeter etc. and you will have a piece of equipment that you will use for a long time. You don't need massive power output - reliability is more useful.
My HV PSU uses a mains transformer and an ignition coil in a nasty wooden box but every time I switch it on it works!
10 to 50 Watts is easy to achieve with a 12 V supply, and can be used to power a small Jacob's Ladder, to charge capacitors for spark gap Tesla coil, capacitor discharge, laser, emp device etc. etc.
