Recently I got a hold of a few old valves (given to me by a friend). I know very little about them (valves that is) having only ever used silicon diodes and transistors and am looking at the possibility of building a simple project with the valves I have. I saw Steve Conner's valve flyback driver and was very interested.

Before I start looking through an old radio books to find out if the valves I have would be suitable for a very low power flyback driver (which may prove to be rather difficult considering that I know very little about valves), I was wondering if anyone experienced could tell me the answer upfront. And if that answer is no, does anyone have a suggestion of a project for which my valves would be appropriate?

Here is a list of the valves I have :

-50C5 (1)
-12AT6 (1)
-12BA6 (3)
-35W4 (2)
-12BE6 (2)
-12AV6 (1)
-35C5 (1)

Thank you,

Matthew

This would be a very low power flybacks driver because you could get about 1W out with these tubes.

Vh: heater voltage
Ih: heater current
Va: anode voltage
Vg2: screen grid voltage
Pa: anode power
Pg2: screen grid power

The 35C5 and 50C5 might be worth a try, but they are pretty low powered. You may get a few tiny sparks out of a TV flyback with them.

The first tube project I ever tried was a distortion circuit for my guitar, made with tubes from an old record player.

My vacuum tube flyback driver. It uses a 6P45S tube. With the voltage doubler it makes 3-4" arcs. Anode voltage 400V.
