I want to do a flyback driver circuit, but I'm still wondering what the best first-time circuit would be, like a balance between simplisity (spelling? can't find the spellcheck...) and performance. I don't really want to do the single transistor/mosfet designs, I've read that they don't work too well... I've found some 555 drivers, but I don;t know what kind of performance they have. I've read around, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for, so I'm looking for someone with experience's opinion.

I am quite fond of the mazzilli driver because it is cheap, simple, and can provide more than enough power.
But a simple 555 running a 1/2 or fullbridge should work fine too. Also, it is easier to tune for resonance with the 555 driver (just twiddle the pot), which allows you to get very large voltages out.

Err, the link to the circuit isnt working. Or is the circuit the pic on the bottom of the post? That driver looks like one of the ones on uzzors page.... I think I'll try the mazzilli if I can find the actual schematic. For this driver what type of flyback do you recommend? I'm getting a bunch of the xformers, with built in diode, removable, and no diode. I think I'll try the 555's on the other ones and one of them the plasma generator circuit that'll come with them.
EDIT: DOH! that picture IS the mazzilli.... cool. I am also wondering what those transistors are... some kind of mosfet? EDIT 2: DOUBLE DOH! it says what the transistors are in the picture....
Oh wait.... what are those diodes on the mazzilli that have a little squiggle on their line? I've heard them reffered to as "zeners" but I'm not sure..

A zener diode is a diode that, in laymens terms, acts as a governor for voltage; a 10v zener will not draw any (noticeable) current at 9v, but at 11v it will look like a short circuit. If you are not running the circuit at >12v you should be able to omit them.
BTW, the best place to get the irfp250's is on ebay, they can usually be had for about $1 a piece. The best place to find the inductor is from an ATX computer power supply, use the big yellow 'donut' core, with about 40 turns of wire on it.

Thanks. I'll look around, but I have no ATX's.... Would is be possible to make my own? I have no idea how to measure uH's....

You don't have to measure the inductance of the inductor. Just put about 30-50 turns on it and it should be fine. Flybacks with built in diodes work fine with this circuit.

If you build the "zvs" or "mazzili" driver, I advise you to put some spacers (thin sheets of non-conductive material- plastic, paper) between the 2 core halves of the flyback, the gap should be around 0.5mm. Without it the flyback often makes *really* nasty screeching sounds, and for flybacks with built-in diodes it also stores energy for the next half-cycle.
