I have been thinking that the primary of a flyback could be placed in parrellel with the primary of the main power transformer. Or the flyback could be connected to the ac output of the power transformer. I don't know if it would work but it could be worth a go.

Yes, this has been done. I once wound maybe 10 turns on the core of an old AC fly back and connected it directly across the output winding of the ferrite transformer in the PSU. This put 12v or 24v at about 50khz across the primary of the flyback transformer.
Note that I would recommend you build a half or full bridge instead as it will give better results and be adjustable and less failure prone. I would not recommend you connect the flyback across the primary side of the PSU's ferrite transformer as you might cause an overload, etc.

They can easily cost less than 10$ us. I've done a few for free due to samples. Also pretty easy once you take the time to figure it out. I'm sure you'll eventually get there so see what you can do with the power supplies!

You can also take out the transistors and build a "CFL-bulb" like self-oscillating half bridge out of them, with a 1:4:4 base drive transformer. The only downside of this circuit is that it likes to tune to resonance with open load and the transformer can be damaged by overvoltage.
