Hi. I would like to attempt the project on this page but i have a few questions first. 1. The guy who built the project switched audio and video signals through an integrated circuit he called a bus switch. The IC he used was a surface mount chip, and since I have little soldering experience I was wondering if I could just switch the audio/video signals through a DIP multiplexer instead? or would the multiplexer see the signals as "data" and only pass the signal when it is positive? 2. All the parts for the project were ordered from digikey. Does digikey sell to the general public/amateur electronics hobbyist, as opposed to only selling to large corporations? thanks for the help.

I would imagine you can get that bus chip in a dip package, as for the digikey question, yes they'll sell and deliver to anyone anywhere (with the exception of terrorist country's I think) mouser also sells to individuals. Heck It's where I buy all my parts from Digikey mostly, sometimes mouser to though.

Why do you want to add noise and distortion to your audio and video signals (even though small) AND add a wasteful power supply that needs another power socket when a simple 3-pole 4-way switch would do the job better and cheaper?

What I'm wondering is why you want to spend $25 on the project, take the time to build it, and run the risk of what Sulaiman is saying, not to mention that it might not work the first time... As opposed to buying a pre-made switch for $15-$25.

I personally would avoid that switcher like the plague (honestly, I have no idea how it got so popular). Not only does it use horrible construction practices (ie, running the video through ribbon cable, using a digital multiplexer for an analog signal, dead bugging said incorrect switch, etc, etc), but as noted earlier a simple switch/relay would outperform it. You could make it usable by at least getting a video multiplexer IC, but really unless you need to control it electronically you are better off with a 3PDTnormal switch at those frequencies.
