Hello all, I've designed half bridge gate driver for the IGBT halfbridge I'm building. This is the schematic I use to test the driver:
Now to the question, when I power up just the +15V to the gate driver, it draws ca. 11mA. However when I connect up the 160V supply, the current to the gate driver increases 4-5 times (and seems to be proportional to this supply voltage). Now I want to know why is that and if it can be considered as normal (before I power it up to full 320V with IGBTs).

I can't answer your question but I'm curious;
Since the IRFP250s have a moderate gate capacitance/charge, why not drive them directly from the IR2153?
I assume you're not using a very high frequency due to the 1.2 us deadtime of the IR2153 as the IR21531 is the low deadtime version.
I connected up th 250's just for testing purposes, I'll be using this gate driver to drive larger IGBTs. I also found a design fault within the IR2153 which, when connected up to the half bridge and powered up, doesn't allow the low side output to go to full potential (with 12V supply, it goes only to ca. 9-10V). This is why I'm using the additional gate drivers, just to be sure that I get proper and fast gate drive, and also because I have them

Yes, it is normal. With high voltage applied to collector driver must fight miller (G-C) capacitance, and energy burned will be proportional to square collector voltage. Increase in supply current will be directly proportional to collector voltage.
I think those IR high-side IC's aren't much of good for high frequencies. I would definitely go for cheaper driver and a GDT whenever I can...

Well it doesn't get much cheaper... tc4452's: free of course , ir2153: 25czk (cca $1.2). I don't like GDTs much because I've always had problems getting them work without ringing and saturation over the frequency range I want (~15-100khz)
