Specifically, 40Watt diode laser modules (I do not need to come anywhere near the 60A at 2v needed to drive these units, and plan to keep well under 20 watts output.)
Just curious if anyone has successfully driven a YAG rod with one. I also considered a fraction of the output to overdrive a 500mW DPSS block (will those laser pointer DPSS blocks survive long if properly cooled?)

I have not yet made a decent attempt at driving any of my YAG rods with my 808nm bars, (sill waiting on some copper coldplates to come), but I am going to tell you that it isn't easy.
Probably the hardest part would be to build the cavity (ie, a total reflector, partial reflector (r=~.98 or so), and yag rod, all in very careful alignment.
The second challenge it keeping everything cool, as as the temperature of the diodes change, their wavelength does too, and then they don't work too tell for pumping YAG anymore. Also, you have to be able to get the 20-40W of the yag rod, which usually done using a very careful machined gold/copper heatsink (which also serves as a reflector for the 808nm light) We are talking at least +/-1*C here... Better would be nice.
Then the easy part it to get your pump light into the rod, which usually is done with a glass waveguide, but you can just have the bar almost touching the rod and get a decent amount of power in.
You can use these bars to drive a DPSS crystal, however your diode bar is actually 19 small emitters all held together. Your DPSS crystal can/should only be pumped by 1, so you should make some type of mask or something that reflects the remaining emitters somewhere safe (not back at the bar). If you are feeling really adventurous, you can unsolder the bar, cleave the last emitter off, solder it back in (being careful not to get any voids) and you have a .2Wlaser that will work fine for pumping your crystal.

IIRC some of the DPSS units are known to even respond to a standard Camera Flash.
cleave? No, I would rather fry the $100 block (adjusting power with placement in beam divergence.) The point was to try to reach the maximum output of the device at N2 temperatures.
What kind of unit/supply do you have? Usually the 19 or 7 bundle arrays have several built in thermistors for operation and shutdown sensor feedback.
Single crystal pulls and large diameter YAG rods with polished ends tend to work better.

I had about a kW worth of unmounted bars, which I have soldered down to the normal 1" copper mounts. No fiber, although I am planning to solder a thermistor down on the block once I finally get my cooling rig built. I am currently using an anciet liner 0-10v/0-100a power supply, although we (me/McFluffin aka John M) have a quick/dirty SMPS driver in the works.
BTW, one must keep in mind that flashlamp pumping and diode pumping are very different topologies, and parts are often not compatable between them (mainly your OC will need to be way more reflective for DPSS than for FPSS)
