The aforementioned have contributed financially to the continuing triumph of 4hv.org. They are deserving of my most heartfelt thanks.
Well my first attempt was a real failure. It seems that the altoids can is too small to fit more than one capacitor. I'm going to scavenge around for a gun case. Any ideas?

I've had good luck with a plastic toolbox. It's a useful size, easy to snap shut and carry, and inexpensive. They usually come with interior tabs that make it easy to lay a wooden shelf upon. In my case, I strapped the capacitors to the bottom of the shelf, and bolted the coil onto the top side.

you need to go buy a cap bank like mine 4 450V 2400uf for a 900V 2400uf capacitor bank and use huge SCRs to trigger it.
Why? And please work on punctuation.
Barry's done some work on low voltage coilguns. (I'm surprised he hasn't mentioned it yet.) Have a look on his page. Most hobbyist coilguns work in the hundreds of volts range. (The ~300V for a flash cap works nicely).
I didn't mean to be rude I was just trying to comment on how I usually see the cap banks being huge but if they are huge I guess they are usually in a very in-efficient coil gun. The second reason is that having higher voltages will help and is more efficient to provide a quicker pulse and move the projectile faster.
Thanks a lot for the ideas guys. I'm going to restart from scratch and make a new coil with the same diameter and about 20 layers thick(hopefully). For a capacitor bank I'm going to use 2 or 3 flash caps. I'm also thinking about making the case out of plexi glass but I need to stop getting a head of myself. I'll update with some pictures soon.
