Here is the ferrofluid display that I recently installed in a science museum.
It has two hand held magnets. The lighting is from a directly reflecting red neon and two indirect fluoro tubes.

Another neat setup, Peter. I'm sure the display will get the attention it deserves. Out of curiosity, what kind of public liability insurance / OH&S do you have to worry about with your displays? Does the GDC take care of that?

.. and here is the video just completed. Runs for 2 minutes.

Public liability is covered by the center. Not much problem with the ferrofluid but more with the HV. The TC demo I am doing next month had to have special approval.

Perhaps a speaker, or a audio modulated magnetic Field?

There is a solid cone with some arrangement of coils inside it. In a longer video I've seen it turned off and a black cone remains in the pool of fluid.

There is an internal helical arrangement so an electromagent coil alone would have to be a very odd one. However a metal helical spring wound just inside the cone with a standard solenoid coil within might do it. Or just mechanically bring the NIB magnet up inside.
